Title

Which is More Attractive.. Colors or Black and White ?

Problem Scenario

I chose this problem because it looked super fun and interesting and my mom works for Richo, and one day when she had a meeting she decorated half of the room very colorful. With colorful balloons, candy, streamers, and the other half was all black and white, with black and white balloons and very dull. 75% of the people who came to her meeting sat on the colorful side. To me is sounded super cool.

Broad Question

Are people more attracted to color or black and white?

Specific Question

Which draws more attention, color or black and white?

Hypothesis

I think that people are more attracted to color than black and white

Which color is more attracting

Variables

Independent Variable:

Color

Dependent Variable:

Number of people attracted

Variables That Need To Be Controlled:

Picture, picture in black and white

Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation

Colorful-full of interest.. exciting
Dull- lacking interest and excitement

General Plan

My general plan is to test which color is more attracting. In my experiment i will have a power point that shows multiple colorful pictures and multiple
dull, boring pictures. I will have the camera set up either on the computer or on a cam cord, so I can watch where peoples eyes go.

Potential Problems And Solutions

I wont be able to see which color people are attracted to. The solution is I watch them look at the pictures.

Safety Or Environmental Concerns

1.)people who don't have 20/20 vision.
2.) people who are colored blind

Experimental Design

(add the correct headings from the experimental design page before beginning)

What is your experimental unit?

Six different colorful pictures, and five different black and white pictures. I am measuring humans attractions to different colors

Number Of Trials:

I will repeat it five times to five different people.

Number Of Subjects In Each trial:

I am having a slideshow with two of the same pictures on the same slide, picture be colorful and the other black and white. 2 subjects in 1 trial

Number of Observations:

I will be taking one measurement.

When data will be collected

March 1,2013

Where will data be collected?:

The data will be collected mainly at school. Maybe at home

Detailed Procedure

Step 1. First collect five different very colorful pictures and save them to your file or computer
Step 2.Then collect five of the same pictures but in black in white and same them to yo file (to make it easier i labeled the colorful one colorfulpic1 and the black and white one which is the same bandwpic1
Step 3. Create a slideshow with two of the pictures on a slide. One black and white picture on one side and the same picture but colorful on the other. Make sure to mix up where the pictures are located.
Step 4. When people are taking the slideshow you should be watching their eyes, in case you cant tell in the camcorder.
Step 5. Next put the data you collected into your notebook. I made a graph to keep every thing organized. I put the persons name in column and wrote down what picture they looked at first.
Step 6. Now you should be able to come up with your answer.
Step 7. After you make the graph put it into the computer.
Step 8. Next type up all the data that you have collected. That would be your hypothesis, variables, problem scenarios, general plan everything.
Step 9. Now print everything and put it into a poster board.

Results

In my experiment, I tested six people with a slideshow with two of the same pictures but one was black and white and the other one was it in colorful, or its original color. During my experiment I collected data of where the peoples eyes traveled when they took the test. My results showed that people ( at least teens) are more attracted to color. There were 57% that looked at the colorful picture first, and 43% that looked at the black and white picture first.

Conclusion

In this experiment I accept my hypothesis. My hypothesis stated that colorful pictures are more attracting than black and white. From the data I collected and information form my experiment It clearly shows that colorful pictures are more attracting then black and white picture.

Discussion

My question in my experiment asked "Which Color People Are More Attracted To, Color Or Black And White." I was able to answer my question with an answer of people are more attracted to color vs. black and white. In my experiment I tested six 12-13 year old's with a slideshow. My experiment had a few problems. One of the problems I has was recording where the people who took the test looked. It was difficult for me to watch the video I took to see where the people looked. I could have been more prepared and ready for this experiment. I could have came up with a better way to record where the people looked and have a second part to the experiment, maybe what colors are more attracting such as red, yellow, orange, pink, etc. Over all my experiment was good, I did have some problems with it but I could still conclude the experiment.
My results are a benefit to society because sometimes when someone is creating a bill bored or sign they could look toward my experiment to see what colors to use. Normally for a bill board or sign people would want to look toward my experiment to see what colors to use.

Benefit to Community and/or Science

My project benefits sales. If you are a sales Representative and your are creating a bill broad you might look towards my experiment for an idea of what colors you should put in you bill board or sign. You would want to put bright and colorful colors because those are bright and attractive to people more than a black and white bill board.

Abstract

In my experiment I wanted to see what color is more attractive. The two colors I used were black and white pictures and colorful pictures. I tested six 12-13 year olds with a slideshow. On each slide of the slideshow there was a colorful picture on one side and the same picture but in black and white on the other side. I tested each person and recorded where everybody looked with a video. After I tested everybody with the slideshow I was able to make a percent of who looked at the colorful picture and who looked at the black and white picture. The percents and my data showed that the colorful pictures were more attracting.
